A: Try l = (long)2; You should cast the value not the variable. Charles Knox (politician) Charles Knox (November 1, 1841 – August 24, 1894) was a businessman and political figure in Manitoba. He represented Victoria in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1882 to 1888. Knox was born in Lindsay, Ontario, the son of Colin Knox and Janet Hamilton, and was educated at the Royal Military College of Canada. He married Sophia Gibson. He joined a Montreal firm of mercantile brokers and came to Manitoba in 1876. He was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in an 1882 by-election held after James Arthur Taylor was named federal minister of customs. In the 1887 general election, Knox was defeated by George H. Barry. He served as registrar for the
